revue des livres
Books are the greatest gift one person can give another.
I am a re-reader. I buy books which I have read already or pick it again just to reconnect with the characters or to rethink. It is the same logic behind watching good movies or shows again. Some books mentioned here are from my re-reading list.
The books I read from July 2009 onwards (some reviews have external links)

- Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
- Still Alice by Lisa Genova
- The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

August 2009
- Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance? by Louis V. Gerstner Jr.
- Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri
- Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

What is it with you and French…so smitten with each other, huh???
me: Just the language not men.
aha… do i smell a rat ??
Just wanted to know what was sooo ‘yoo-hoo’ about being the first commenter!! Hence dropped a few words here
So,am I the first…am I am I??
me: That you have to ask Itchy and scratchy. Ha..ha..ha..
Deeps there is no fun in this…
C’mon,Hitchy…who doesnt want to come first..you sure started a trend, have to tell ya
!
will be waiting for you to finish it and then I will pick it up
temme how it turned out okay?
me: Sure. Will edit and add when I finish. Still in India chapter.
And where do you get these creative ideas from might I ask?
that brain is working overtime!
revue des livres *Wondering how more chic can Solilo get *
me: Why the rolling eyes?
what does that mean btw ??
me: You mean the title? It means Book reviews or at least I think so
Ok,about the book..sounds interesting…will wait for your final edit to go and pick it up
me: I loved it so far. It is like reading someone’s diary.
My review of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ is now complete. I haven’t revealed much. I don’t like to give away the content whether in books or movies. I would rate it 7/10.
Anyone want to discuss or review it, leave a note here.
I mostly steer clear of the people who find misery in everything around them.
me too:)
The review is really interesting Solilo.
I mean which woman wouldn’t want to do this like you said?
I like both the quotes ..the second one especially
beautiful! Love it!
me: I LOVED that quote. It is so apt. Often people question the purpose of life and this is the response.
Any book thats a pick me up , positive, mood lifter kind of book is my kind of book:)
Javier Bardem is a good actor:)
I think the movie might be really interesting
yeah who else but Julia roberts?:)
She does a reasonable good job though:)
I think with age she is getting better and people are focusing less on her looks..
there’s a certain ..cant think of a word in English..but in Hindi the word would be ‘Thehraav’ in her acting now..
me: I have a feeling that movie would be better than the book.
Also insightful, engaging and humorous
so that says a lot about the book:)
picking it up next time I go out:)
Typo ‘Reasonably good job’
Still Alice will leave a lump in your throat – a must read.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Time Traveler’s Wife . It is a love story that the writer very neatly weaved going back and forth in time.
Eagerly waiting for the movie release on August 14.
Thank you for visiting;-). Just curious, how did you like the Hindi-Bindi club?
me: Lakshmi, you don’t have to thank me always
. It is a pleasure to welcome new bloggers. You leaving a link here gave me a chance to hop over to yours.
Have you tried WordPress? It is more user friendly as compared to blogger.
Hindi-Bindi club was interesting at first but then lost the plot. The characters sounded clichéd. I think it will appeal more to non-Indians or second generation Indians here. Still not too bad. Have you read The Joy Luck club? The premise is similar.
Pick it up and see for yourself. May be you will like it.
Solilo, I finished “The Joy Luck club” last night. I liked it. I will wait a bit to try Hindi-Bindi club. Will take a break with other themes.
me: Laks, Do share what you picked up.
Just noticed that I do seem to thank a lot
Could be couple of things in addition to actually being thankful – One is the influence of immigrating to US(10 years back) and the other is using it with kids often. It was among the first few phrases my toddler learnt to speak!
No, I have not read “The Joy Luck club”. Just put that on my library hold.
I too noticed that wordpress is more user friendly in terms of comment threading. I am evaluating it
My daughter Peanut suggests ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ for everyone.
It is one of the best books which every child should own.
Peanut has a suggestion too?
sho cute
Abhi maasi will pick up this book asap
me: Wait! may be Abhi maasi will get it as a gift from Peanut on ahem day
I will suggest it to S, thanks Peanut
Solilo, I am not reading anything right now except Parents and Good Housekeeping
, this time GH had a recipe for chicken tikka masala!
me: I love magazines too. Some time back Martha Stewart had an Indian journalist do a guest post where she posted Indian recipes and a fabulous spread in her beautiful home.
Solilo, I just finished “Bitter sweets” by Roopa Farooki. Eventhough I wanted to read something not related to Indian Immigrants, this is what came up in my hold queue. It was a simple read and I enjoyed it.
uh..all this French..didn’t know this was the book section!! would have dived right in!
I have to pick Ladies India. can’t seem to find a copy here. it bugs me no end- why only indian authors who have won a Booker are available besides a few other big guns. So sad that Down under is missing out on so many good books!
me: Ha.ha..ha..@ the French.
Anita Nair writes simple stories. Just started reading it.
*ladies Coupe . Haven’t ever read her. Will certainly do.
also loved your review on TT’s wife! lovely space. wish there was a virtual rocking chair somewhere..would hang around the whole day!!
me: KG, That is not my review. I provided an external link.
I started the section to write my own reviews but then I found it time consuming so when I get time, I write my own else I give external links to the reviews that I agree with.
TT’s wife was a good read but the movie was big disappointment.
oh ok. Both work, your review or other’s.
The movie is yet to be released here. bad you say??
I was so looking forward to it.
me: I was so eager that I caught the movie first day of its release and hugely disappointed. The lead had no chemistry and they just couldn’t bring up the effect. Also, the little girl having feelings for grown man didn’t look so bad while reading but in the movie it looked creepy and the fact that the guy first appears naked in the woods.
4 books a month! thats pretty good record and quite some consistency
Solilo..
this is inspiring me too..
me: Tara, Do have a book corner so I can pick from your list too. I am not a voracious reader. I am more of a writer but I always pick up something or just take one from my husband’s collection. He is a voracious reader.
Will do when I have a list worth putting up
Strangely, I have noticed that I can do endless of e-reading but when i sit with a book in my hand, i doze off to sleep land. The book should be of high interest or i should have something to munch to keep myself awake..
I am reading Dan Brown’s latest book – The lost symbol.. very captivating.
me: When you finish do write a review, Tara (only if you like). Be it movies or books, I never pick up new ones.
I wait till the euphoria dies down and then go watch/read it.
Now i know where to see the books i have to read. Will finish IHM list then will take ur list.
me: Do share yours too, Sari. I can pick from your collection too.
I just started few months back reading regularly, got few books in the list of books i read. Before blogging i read very few books but once i started reading the book reviews i am getting tempted to buy and read it.:)
Hey,have you read Paulo Coelho’s Zahir?I’m currently reading that.I have liked whatever I’ve read so far. Will let you know my final verdict once I’ve finished it.
!
Being a slow reader, will take my own sweet time to finish it
me: No. I haven’t.
