October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Reach out to a friend or relative who might need your help. Let them know that they are not alone and that they have the option to say NO.

“The motive behind domestic violence is power. If not by physical strength then by emotional overpowering.”

Do read the entire article on ‘No Gender Inequality’ (NGI) and spread awareness. Be the voice.

Autumn pleasures

2009 October 21

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

1. The colors – Red, Orange, Yellow, Brown. This mix of colors in the wardrobe and good scarves to go with it. Turtlenecks and cashmere sweaters. The best style statements are made in Autumn.

2. Coffee and rum cake – When we were in school, my parents switched to Nescafe at the start of Autumn and it continued till the beginning of Spring. We were and still are tea drinkers but just those few months our evenings had a whiff of Nescafe. I remember those family evenings in Jammu sipping Coffee with homemade Rum cakes.

3. Fallen rusty leaves- Our backyard already has a bed of yellow leaves. Running over it along with Peanut and rejoicing on hearing the crushed sound becomes part of playtime. Reliving childhood with her gives immense joy.

4. Candles smelling of cinnamon and bayberry always adorn my kitchen table in the evening. Candles also make perfect gift during this season.

5. Thanksgiving dinner at friends- Roasted Turkey, cranberry sauce and mashed potato is a combo I love.

6. Fall foliage- Going for drives to see fall foliage, clicking pictures and just walking casually while Peanut runs around picking pine corns.

7. Cool breeze- It reminds me of crisp breeze in the courtyard when my parents sat outside and chatted after dinner. Brother and I joined them after our homework.

8. It is the time for pumpkin patching, corn mazing and apple picking as a family. The carved pumpkin displays in front of some houses are a marvel.

9. Influx of shorebirds along the coast and ground birds are a hiker’s delight. It is time for some rare birdwatching.

10. Sipping Red Wine, cozying up with The Other Half under a throw; catching a good movie or a good book. Weather is perfect to relax.
