Disappearing world : Blog Action Day 2009

2009 October 15

[Oct 15 is Blog Action Day – an annual event that unites the world's bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day on their own blogs with the aim of sparking discussion around an issue of global importance. This year's topic is Climate change.]

blogactionday

On every visit to India, visiting my father’s family temple in Kerala always tops my list. The reason is more spiritual than religious. The family temple is near a beach and it is a place where you are automatically in meditation listening to temple bells and the sound of the sea. My father tells me how sea almost touches the places where they used to play during his childhood days. The sea continues to distend, imperceptible to our naked eyes till it has really swallowed a huge land. There is a high possibility that in future this temple too would be submerged in water and be part of the disappearing world.

In 2006 the disappearance of Lohachara Island was reported by Indian researchers but strangely no specific study was ever done to prove that the island was permanently inundated. It was reported [link]that rising seas, caused by global warming, have for the first time washed an inhabited island off the face of the Earth. Recently there was news that Lohachara Island is rising from the waters again. It doesn’t mean that the sea is retreating. There are different geomorphic reasons to reemergence of the island. The mystery of disappearing and reemerging Lohachara island are a topic of research for scientists but it is clear that the reason for land near the delta doing such vanishing act are rise in sea-level, coastal erosion, cyclones etc. all as a result of global warming. Smithsonian magazine has a list of ancient cities lost to the seas that features Mahabalipuram, India. Disappearance of many ancient Indian cities like Valabhi and Muziris are intriguing.

In the past most changes were due to natural causes like Volcanic eruptions, continental drift, ocean currents and earth’s tilt but now human influence is a major cause of this change.Today when we talk about climate change it is about the changes caused in the environment because of human activity and that includes mainly greenhouse emissions. According to researchers, Methane concentration in the atmosphere has increased approximately 150% in recent times due to industrial pollution. Other major contributers are carbon dioxide from air pollution and nitrous oxide from fertilizers. All these greenhouse gases concentrated in the atmosphere beyond natural level cause global warming.

Looming climate change could turn today’s favorite destinations into tomorrow’s nightmare. According to Worldwatch, Sea levels have already been rising by 11 inches per century and are likely to rise another 22 inches by 2100.

Most endangered travel destinations (see before they sink or singe) [link]

  • Everglades National Park, Florida (Threat: urban development)
  • Galapagos Islands (Threat: over-tourism)
  • Chan Chan Archaeological Zone in Peru (Threat: Global warming)
  • Kathmandu Valley, Nepal (Threat: Urbanization, pollution)
  • Mount Kilimanjaro’s ice fields, Tanzania (Threat: Global warming)
  • Glacier National Park, Montana (Threat: Global warming)
  • The Tajmahal, India (Threat: over-tourism, Pollution)
  • Luxor, Egypt (Threat: Rising water levels caused by urbanization)
  • Great Barrier Reef, Australia (Threat: Global Warming, coral bleaching)
  • The Michoacan Mountains, Mexico (Threat: Deforestation)

The list doesn’t end here because we are alarmingly changing the environment.

Kyoto protocol got a blow when US pulled out of it because then President George W. Bush thought that implementing it would impact US economy. The discontent is between developing countries on one side and China and India on the other. China and India have ratified the protocol but the countries just have to report the emission levels whereas developed countries have a target to reach. US has objection here because it thinks in future China and India with growing economy and huge population is a major contributor and thus needs to decide on reduction of emission level. India is going to more or less adopt the same policy in coming climate change conference in Copenhagen. India’s Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh talks about India’s stance on Copenhagen summit.

Common man does not care about politics of developing and developed nations. We want to see results. We want to breathe unpolluted air, drink safe water and preserve land for future generations. United Nations Climate Change conference is in Copenhagen from Dec 7-Dec 18. Take action: Sign the petition and demand the world leaders to personally attend the climate summit.

Global warming is much graver issue than meets the eye..This post comes at an apt time,Sols.
It is saddening to see Taj Mahal’s name being mentioned in one of the endangered destinations.

me: Taj Mahal is turning Yellow-ish day by day due to Industrial pollution. Sometime back I read that govt. is going to try multani mitti treatment in true Indian way to bleach Taj Mahal.

will be back to share more
    Kudos for this post,Sols.

I sincerely this issue is addressed in the right and prompt way.

me: Hope world leaders arrive at a decision at Copenhagen summit this December.

sols, right now as i write this comment theres an event going on called the Qatar Today Green Awards,to honour all those companies which are seriously working towards ensuring a greener tomorrow.
While preparing for this event in which R will be giving a talk,he had shared some facts and figures collected from different sources. And as per that world’s richest 20% economies consume about 76.6% of earth’s resources, middle 60% consume about 22% and the poorest 20% consume a meagre 1.5% of earth’s resources.

      Just look at the margin!

      Its shocking!

Just thought I’d share it here.

me: Thanks Deeps. That is nice of you to share it here. Why don’t you join too and write about it on yours? You can still register and write. More voices – more reach. :)

I was reading somewhere that even Ganges will disappear as the glaciers are getting impacted by global warming :(

i wanted to hv a retirement house near the banks of that river Solu :’(

    how can we save it?

me: Taru, for starters I guess people should stop throwing dead bodies in the river.

But yes! it would be surprising if Ganges disappears like Sarasvati river.

  3. 2009 October 15

I totally agree with you!!! As a common man we all want to see changes which can help us! But sometimes I feel we do not contribute in it the way we can!!!

me: Smita, all of us can make our contribution in small ways by adopting to eco-friendly ways, by recycling and by taking shopping bags to supermarkets and refusing plastic bags.

But the major decisions on industrial pollution and greenhouse emissions needs to be taken by govt. of each country. It is the responsibility of policy makers and most times in the race to improve economy, other major issues gets compromised.

I don’t know how successful this campaign would be but at least all of us can do something to make our voice heard.

Its true about Mahabalipuram ! There are two sunken temples somewhere near Mahabalipuram. Its not even available for tourism. However, you could visit it illegally with local tourists. Search for sunken temples Mahabalipuram in google and you could get to see images taken by a few daredevils.

me: Looked at it when I read that article. Amazing. Isn’t it?

Some say global warming is a myth, but I donno how they can pass off such a comment when it is very much evident.

me: Vims, there are people here who say vaccinations aren’t important. People don’t vaccinate their children and you will find people voicing their displeasure over all vaccinations.

For example, Chennai is a lot cooler than it was a few years ago. and on the contrary, I feel Kerala is getting warmer over the years.

me: It could be because Kerala is a densely populated state.

vimmu the point is the climate conditions are changing, its become hotter than before and also sometimes colder which is not really good…

there was a movie I am forgetting the name where the whole city is covered by ice due the effects of global warming… no one can survive ofcourse the issue of dramatized in the movie but the fact remains the same we are messing up a lot with nature

    • 2009 October 15

@ chennai : Exactly dude, i’m feeling the same

    • 2009 October 16

around 15 years ago i saw a movie on rainforest , and was surprised to see how corporate greed saw the chopping of trees and jungles … that is the reason why many have disappeared. now when i see these enclosed samples of rainforest in botanical gardens, i wonder will our future generation see trees in glass houses only ?

  5. 2009 October 15

It’s a scary picture, no? Bloggers can spread awareness, but we need governments to wake up and act. Bang-on post.

    me: :)

  6. 2009 October 15

brilliant and very well researched post sols.. kudos!!!

the whole thing is so scary and there is so much confusion abt the issue… I think the most important thing to do right now is to create awareness and try to do our bit to it……..

me: Yes! most important is to spread awareness. We can do our bit but it still depends upon our policy makers to take care of bigger issues.

Did you write your BAD09 post?

  7. 2009 October 15

I think there is a more sinister reason for Lohachara Island’s disappearance and reappearance – there’s a sea monster!!!

On a serious note, the US and China are the main culprits but what are they doing to change the situation? Nothing…

Take for instance logging – Western countries blame third world countries for deforestation…Fine…Poor countries are cutting down trees but where is the wood going? To the US and Europe…I’ve always wondered why they don’t build brick houses there like we do in India – not only would it be more environmentally friendly but also ‘tikao’…But alas, only money talks…I’m sure lobbyists for the logging industry are paying a lot of money to lawmakers to ensure that their industry continues to grow…

As the ABBA song goes “Money, money, money…”

me: Bones, that is the whole issue. US pulled out of Kyoto protocol too blaming China and India. Let us see what happens in Copenhagen.

  8. 2009 October 15

What to do most of our places are urbanising, i don’t know if there is any solution for controling the emission, pollution and all…Everyone is aware about the fact but most of them don’t have any idea what to do….I never expected taj mahal will be in that list,it is so disheartening….Many of the backwaters in kerala to facing the same problem(one good example -chaliar
Increase in usage of AC in last few years(unfortunatily it is very hard to avoid it now a days),increase in no of vehicles in our street, deforestation etc contributed a lot for raping the nature, which resulted in global warming, natural disasters etc.We can do a little about this like 1.Encourage planting trees 2. Improve the quality of public transportation like western countries (once people get a better , faster transportation they will obivoiusly depend on it)

me: Anish, we can’t stop using modern amenities but we can reduce pollution and go green by adopting various methods like recycling. I think it is for our govt. to take initiative.

  9. 2009 October 15

Isn’t Maldives also slated to go under water shortly…

me: Rakesh, there are so many destinations in various lists. So I compared almost all and chose the ones featured in all lists. These destinations top all lists.

    Have you seen this…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQmz6Rbpnu0

    me: Will check.

It’s really relevant – that quote by Greenpeace. Though it really won’t happen exactly like that but if we continue with our ways, something will give in.

  10. 2009 October 15

“When the last tree is cut, the last river poisoned, and the last fish dead, we will discover that we can’t eat money…” –Greenpeace

    How true…

The Thumb and the tongue… give us humans the upper hand a superior grip and an ability to communicate… plus we are social animals… sigh…

how have we damanged this planet… making other spieces extinct… building concrete jungles… destroying natural habitats… building a warmer planet thats getting hotter by the day… !!!

Consider yourself lucky you made it while we havent damaged it enough.. what our grandchildren will get will be far worse… :(

  11. 2009 October 15

    and Hey Vallabhi disappeared ??

I need to discuss this.. there is a city Vallabhipur… still there and it is on the way to Gir forests from our house… they serve lovely fafda’s !!!! have a lot of Jain temples.. and I am a jain…

I think the name is different… are you talking of Lothal ?

me: Hitch, it seem there was a city called ‘Valabhi’, an ancient city that disappeared. Today’s Vallabhi is a modern day place that was inhabited later so they chose the same name. http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/621794/Valabhi

I am not much sure of it because there is limited info on it. Please do ask auntie about it since she is a brilliant History teacher. I would love to learn more about it.

  12. 2009 October 15

I saw this post 5 hours back, but went to class therefore couldn’t comment :(

I am convinced regarding the topic of today’s post. And I’m terrified to thinking what is waiting for our future generation. You put the main thing — “We want to breathe fresh air, drink fresh water, do want to preserve land for the future”….

One day, may be our next generation will curse us for “whimsical” attitudes to climate, that will cause enormous problems in living on this earth :(

Thanks for such a nice post Solilo. I wish I would post on this day, on this topic.. something from my perspective….. :???:

me: Sure Mahmud! you can register even today and write something on the topic. Even a line, some tips, picture, poem..anything about global warming.

    • 2009 October 15

I did it… Have a visit on my blog if you could manage time….. :)
I am going to tag it for you… :D

me: Mahmud, will read yours for sure.

  13. 2009 October 15

The thought is really scary! In Mangalore there is a tiny village where every year a part of it is swallowed by the sea. Whenever we happen to watch the movie “Day after tomorrow” we realise it may happen in the near future :(

me: It is scary..how sea level rises so fast.

  14. 2009 October 15

totally agree sols…. we must all contribute our little parts.. and it WILL make a difference..

most of us don’t bother thinking how will it matter if I only care.. everyone must.. but we forget even that little concern could delay it by some time… we could encourage others also to do little changes in their living style..

i believe charity begins at home.. and at my place I totally make sure there is no wastage of electricity or water or food or paper…. my small part.. i am doing. we use only as much we need.

  15. 2009 October 15

Its so sad to note and its time we take action before its time to say ‘Paradise Lost’ :(

We want to breathe unpolluted air, drink safe water and preserve land for future generations – I so wish the future generation gets to c the lovely places we have loved visiting and hope they can atleast be aware of the colour called ‘green’ out of their books :(

  16. 2009 October 15

Great Post Sols! Well researched and extremely well put up. We humans are stupid, at various level, selfish and extremely extremely foolish. It gets so scary, these scenarios, I remember back in school, when we were taught about CFCs and the greenhouse effect, I was so shocked, because I thought, why are we letting it happen, if we know the threats. We do not become pro-active, till we are hurt, and by that time, it may just be too late to do anything. We wait for the ‘big guys’ to pass resolutions, but then do even they really care? I don’t think about these things, because they scare me to the core, and I feel helpless. At times I think it will be really good if as they are predicting, the world does come to an end in 2012, and Mother Earth can actually breathe in peace, and rest and recuperate.

  17. 2009 October 15

    Brilliant Post Solilo!!!!!!

Global Warming may not affect us drastically in our lifetime but our children & their children are not going to have an easy time if we dont start doing something about it NOW.

People tend to think nothing much can be achieved alone. Thats where we are wrong. We can contribute by primarily observing our carbon diet[remember Gore] & then work towards….
Changing our travel habits[take a bus or use a cycle atleast once a week]
Reducing our consumption of animal products
Reducing our consumption of Power & Electricity
    Recycling plastic & paper
Planting more trees[deforestation is one of the primary reasons]

and so much more…if only we looked:-(

Once again a superb post Solilo…..KUDOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. 2009 October 15

    awesome wonderful post!

  19. 2009 October 15

Great post Solilo. Our house in kerala is close to periyar river. And several years back, there started being very big trenches in the river due to businesses lifting sand from the river for construction. Growing up I can remember atleast 5-6 of my neigbors drowning there. Our local authorities never took any serious action on that. Two of the victims were my friend’s twin brothers; we all sadly observed how quiet the mom became after losing her two boys. Thanks for reminding us on the importance of preserving our earth.

  20. 2009 October 15

    Great Post, Sols!

There is so much we can do , you know.. In small, but sustainable ways.. Here they are spreading awareness is every possible way.. Even children’s programs stress on the need to reduce, reuse, recycle.. And I am proud to say that we do try to do our bit. We try to reduce wastage, reuse what we can and recycle everything we can. You know, it is the developed countries that are mainly responsible for a lot of the global warming – I forget the actual figures- but I remember reading about it some time back – but the gap is atrocious. That is not to say, that we can’t do our bit. Solar heating, for instance.. My parents have a smokeless oven in their place which uses driftwood, which is easily available – cutting down the consumption of cooking gas considerable.

Having said all that, things will not change unless govts start to take serious action. Here, in the UK, I have seen the seriousness with which even govt agencies are trying to tackle the issue. But every little helps – and am sure we can all help in one way or the other..

  21. 2009 October 15

    Brillant post solilo :)

  22. 2009 October 15

Absolutely brilliant Solilo!! I read it first thing this morning and then got an unexpected call from the service centre that if I could get them the recovery disk, I could bring my laptop home today! Ended up spending the entire day there, but am finally after three long months I am typing from my own laptop!!!! So your interview and this post got me good things… bad part is I couldn’t write a Blog Action Day post… but heartiest congratulations to you- it was great reading your interview!! Learnt a little more about you… that you want to settle down in Kerala and welcome your mornings to ’suprabhatam’ … :)

  23. 2009 October 15

Just now on television I heard that the ice will melt in summer at the north pole. 10 years!!! That was shocking to hear. Imagine the artic will be a sea instead of ice! Its so incomprehensible.
    Good post.

  24. 2009 October 16

@Oorja: You are doing absolutely right, Oorja (your name suits the occasion). We should recycle and avoid plastic bags. If every individual at least attempts these two things then that would be a big step.

@Swar, @PGoof : We can do things at individual level still some things needs our policy makers’ attention.

@Nancy: Yeah! We don’t care about the things if it won’t affect us. Nice tips there, Nance. You should just post it on your space too if you haven’t already. More voices..more awareness.

    @Reema, @Laks, Saritha: Thanks.

@Smi: That is the whole issue here. US thinks now developing countries like China and India should contribute the same way they do even though their greenhouse emission is much higher. Actually EU fared much better. Hope US takes a positive step this December. It is going to be India vs. China vs. US.

@IHM: You can still write few lines as there is still time for Oct 15 to end.

@Nita: It is scary, Nita. Slowly everything submerges in the sea. Things we have read in storybooks are not turning real. It is said that most of New Orleans in US would be underwater by next century. Hurricane Katrina already wiped so much in the area. We have clear evidences on how fast nature is reacting.

  25. 2009 October 16

    SO true Don sols,

I agree with indias stand on this………… The US emits about 20 times the annual CO2 that we do……. and the population is so less compared to india………

The world as we know it is going to change……. india is also in major shit……… coz the whole of the northern plains depend on the water from the himalayan rivers… and at the current rate of global warming, those ice caps are going to melt in the next 50 years…….. and the whole of north india, and southern china will be in problem……..

already the ground water level is last getting depleted in north india…… thanks to farming………….

and about the rising sea level part, yeah, that is also another major problem…………

    and the good news:
india, right now stands on the second position for investments in renewable energy…….. we are in the right direction unlike china……….. hope things get better in the future :P

Each one needs to contribute at personal level. I liked the greenpeace quote that you put here. Money seems to be driving people crazy to exploit mother earth like anything.
I work for a green company by the way ;)
