Does Obama deserve the Nobel Peace Prize?

2009 October 9

President Obama wins 2009 Nobel peace prize. The conferral of one of the world’s top accolades on a President less than nine months in office was greeted with gasps of astonishment this morning in our small town. I don’t know if it has to do with the almost 100% Republican community here but even from my neutral point of view I still can’t comprehend the reasons behind this honor to the President.

Obama was honored “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people,” the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Thorbjoern Jagland said. [link]

“I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership,” President Obama said from the White House Rose Garden. ”I will accept this award as a call to action.”

Obama is the third sitting US President to have won the prize after President Roosevelt and Wilson. Former President Jimmy Carter won in 2002 and former Vice President Al Gore received the prize in 2007.

In 1906, President Roosevelt won the prize for brokering a peace between Russia and Japan – two countries that turned against US in future. In 1919, President Wilson won it for his post-WWI peace efforts. This didn’t prevent WWII. So the question is how can a President be merely awarded for initiative? Shouldn’t final result matter? For a layman it seems he was awarded simply because he is not George W. Bush.

Another question that always lingers in my mind when I hear of the Nobel peace prize is why did Mahatma Gandhi never receive one? I am not bringing Mahatma Gandhi in here because I am an Indian by birth but simply because I don’t know any person who deserves a peace prize more than Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times between 1937 and 1948 but never received the prize, being assassinated on 30 January 1948 two days before the closing date for the 1948 Peace Prize nominations. The Norwegian Nobel Committee had very likely planned to give him the Peace Prize in 1948 as they considered a posthumous award, but ultimately decided against it, and instead chose not to award the prize that year. It was stated then that “there was no suitable living candidate” but in 1961, it was awarded posthumously to Swedish diplomat and the second Secretary-General of the United Nations Dag Hammarskjöld who died after being nominated. Years later, Nobel committee regretted their decision on Gandhi and when Dalai Lama was awarded the Peace Prize in 1989, the chairman of the committee said that this was ‘in part a tribute to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi’.

Going back to the burning question now, Does Obama deserve the Nobel Peace Prize so soon?

On a lighter note, President sure deserves a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his magnetic chemistry with his wife Michelle. [picture link]

When I first read this news I thought it was a gag…. a very funny gag. It seemed so incredulous.

me: I got up very early today and first news I read was this around 4:00 am. I thought I am seeing things. :D

I am not as worried about the sanctity of this award as I am about rewarding this man before he delivers on what he has promised. I hope all this craziness just doesn’t leave him as a president who showed a lot of promise but did not deliver…

  5. 2009 October 9

    Nah!

    Not at all!!!

I was shocked to read the news as it flashed !!!!

Having nothing more to add !!!

me: It would be embarrassing for Obama to accept it. His name like Churchill’s will go down in history as one of the undeserving Nobel Laureates.

    • 2009 October 10

Churchill got a Nobel prize? *Faints* :D

      Destination Infinity

me: Churchill was awarded Nobel Prize for Literature. Now how is that for double faint? :D

  6. 2009 October 9

Thanks for sharing the news Solilo…

I am really shocked to read the title of the post in my reader to be frank…

seems like Nobel committee decided to throw some surprise and give mild heart attack to people..

if they wanted to give in strong attack they would have awarded George W.Bush Jr. :P :P :P

    me:

    • 2009 October 9

      nobody claimed so me 1ST!!!!

    • 2009 October 9

LOL :) Yeah that would have had better shock value Kanagu!!

Sakshi, Crafty, IHM and rest of I am First nominees  after hearing this news!!!

        • 2009 October 12

It’s not when you write but what you write that counts Masood, because there can only be one first. We need to appreciate the sixth and the sixteenth too .. everybody is equal.

  7. 2009 October 9

If you look at the full list, you will find many there who should have been nowhere near the Nobel. Obama has just started. There is much promise but he has not yet delivered. Too early.

me: Yes! many in the past were undeserving and many deserving ones omitted.

I think it came a bit too soon.
Sometimes the only way to maintain peace is to threaten with consequences- any good leader including a school teacher knows that. I don’t think Obama believes in that. Granting everyone an equal status in an ideal world is fine but in a not so ideal world being apologetic and granting undeserving respect can have an opposite effect.
    I am talking like a republican too, ain’t I?

me: No. You aren’t. :D Concur with you on ‘undeserving respect’ part.

I don’t doubt Obama’s intentions in wanting and promoting peace at all. But his philosophy, there is so much he needs to prove…
I have tried his philosophy on a personal basis and failed. Being nice to mean people, being apologetic, trying to please just makes them justify their actions. Be stern, threaten with consequences and they are the ones that want to please you. Peace sometimes comes at the cost of lots of dislike for you. I hope Obama can restore my faith in the idealistic ways again…but I doubt it.

me: He is trying a different approach and may be he will succeed. Too soon. That still doesn’t justify this award.

  9. 2009 October 9

Oh shoot!! I was cribbing abt this Nobel business to my poor nobel husband all morning. For a change I sat and had tea with him and we discussed abt it till he said he is getting late for office and I am yet to start cooking his lunch

I agree to your point that Obama definitely can take home Nobel Prize for chemistry  but a Nobel peace Prize :???: for what??? for sitting peacefully while soldiers are out there on a battlefield? for sitting peacefully while common man in Afghanistan and other places are gunned down by US peace keeping soldiers? for sitting peacefully and having beer with police officer’s after calling them stupid? Ok to be honest I think Obama definitely is much much better than any US president so far. Let’s rephrase that one – I think Obama is definitely a better president among the president’s I know like Billu Boy and Bush  I think Obama is one over worked president  gosh look at him now and Obama on his campaign!!! He looks like he grew 10 years older in these 9 months. Baahhh my husband say’s he has no time for makeup now

me: As someone said..for making peace with Hillary. :D

I think the nobel Peace Prize ppl are loosing their whatever!! They want to bring in limelight and paparazzi to their functions now and who else is a better choice than a President who is talked abt in politicaly circles to kitty party :rolls:

Ayyo leaving before I show my political ignorance royally here

  10. 2009 October 9

oh my….your wordpress has decided to sent my comments to spam forever….sobs!!

  11. 2009 October 9

Sols, I was going to post on this too -but you have said everything I wanted to.

As I read somewhere, it is almost like he is being given this for his campaign speeches and for not being George Bush! You are right – initiative is important – but results – especially when it comes to awards like the Nobel Prize – should matter far, far more. While Obama might rise up to it and be genuinely worthy of it – in few years from now, right now, was certainly way too soon.

me: “it is almost like he is being given this for his campaign speeches and for not being George Bush!” Exactly! I think the committee calculated it all wrong. May be they thought everyone will lap it.

As for Mahatma Gandhi – I think even now to give him the Nobel prize would be apt – his contribution to peace is timeless and we(as in the world, not just India) have lessons to learn from him is immense! It is a shame that he has not been honored and every other person seems to be honored.. And it also makes one wonder, if the Mahatma had been from the Western World – would he have been treated the same?

me: That is why I mentioned the posthumous part because that was the technical glitch the committee mentioned eons ago.

    • 2009 October 9

then Gandhiji would have received Nobel prize from 1937 to 1948 or the name of the prize would have changed to a Gandhian or Gandhi prize.. LOL

      • 2009 October 10

add if Gandhiji has born in any of the western country before the above comment..

  12. 2009 October 9

Got distracted reading the comments… now moving to the post. :)

  13. 2009 October 9

I suspect it was a very political decision.. Obama certainly does not deserve Nobel prize at this point of his life, both as a politician or as a humanitarian.
I personally believe that generally the Noble prize winners are deserving people, but once in a while it does go to not so deserving folks. And Obama’s prize falls under the latter category.

me: The funny thing is he knows that he is undeserving but he will still accept it because he is just too polite to refuse.

  14. 2009 October 9

Politics everywhere? Why wasn’t Gandhi given the Nobel prize? I did not know of all this … and when you think about it, nobody deserves it like Gandhi did.

    me: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/articles/gandhi/index.html

I think Obama could have got it a little later…

    • 2009 October 10

Let Obama do sometihng first… !!! I guess this Nobel is to stop him from thinking of any WAR !!!!!!!! lol… everyone has lost their marbles… !!!!1

or maybe the Nobel’s werent getting enough attention… !!!!1

So give an award to someone who doesnt deserve… create controversy !!!! and Awards rating goes up !!!!!!!!!!!!

Sol’s did they read your last post and decide to do it the wrong way …. just like us bloggers do ????????

  23. 2009 October 10

I couldn’t always think about the actual meaning of many things… like this one..
I never find that the United Nation is keeping global peace… Rather it is the representative of the super powers…. The Afghanistan, Iraq are the proof of such power of USA.
No reason what, there should be any question regarding the noble prize of Barack Obama….. It is very much expected… they are always the Flag-bearers of peace keeping in whole world

But anyway, thanks Solilo for such your post. Obama at least not the Bush, I wanna say at last. :)

  24. 2009 October 10

As much as I like Obama, this is really premature. What has changed since the Bush era? Afghanistan and Iraq are still completely a mess. Americans can buy guns like we buy chocolates. Peace? How is this peaceful?

  25. 2009 October 10

I think the Award committe did the smartest move here. Its not too soon Solilo. We all are missing the big picture here.
Infact now Obama will have to live up to the expectations!!! LOL!!!

BTW that chemistry picture is kinda kinky.. :) How do they manage to take such pictures

  26. 2009 October 10

it is very early for him to get the nobel
is there some politics involved or some hidden reason behind some underhand dealings????
or the fact that he is a black got to do something with it?

  27. 2009 October 10

Al Gore won it for a Powerpoint presentation and Obama for campaign promises…The Nobel Peace Prize is utter crap – I’ve never taken it seriously…I wonder how much the Democrats contributed to the fund?

  28. 2009 October 10

    It’s very early isn’t it?

he got Guantanimo Bay closed. That’s about it.
Healthcare still sucks big time in USA doesn’t it?

What peace? Troops are still battlingn it out in Afghanistan aren’t they?

I don’t know Sols… I don’t approve of it at all! A lot of politics..
His initiatives are worth an applaud, but that’s just it. Not much has materialised… Maybe a couple of years down, one can say he deserved it. But now, it’s just too early…

There are many more worthy people who have been working tirelessly for peace in Afghanistan, Africa…

    Sigh.

Just checked the newspaper here and was SHOCKED!!!
I loved Obama for his diplomacy and sense of thought in his speeches and the kind of craze he created during the poll. Not many have the talent to attract people and their emotions to this extent….

But…NOBEL PRIZE…hmm…not sure if he really deserves for his work. Now that I have read the news, plan to check in net, about his good deeds and the benefits etc..etc…atleast I shall know something about him then!

    Have a nice weekend Solilo!

Am feeling better today. I was low, since my ITALY visa was screwed up for no mistake of mine, and was supposed to be there for a imp project go live next week. I was even ready to forego Diwali for it….It happens:)

Say Hello to Peanut from my side….Its been long, I heard something about her, in your blog…

  32. 2009 October 10

Gandhiji !!!! sigh…. if there was any peace award… actually it should be named after him !!!! nevermind… we dont need a noble to certify him !!!!

    • 2009 October 13

They didnt give the nobel for peace the year Gandhiji died… as they thought there was no worthy candidate… that year !!! :|

  33. 2009 October 10

yesterday, when i saw the news, I too ,like someone above has also stated, thought it was a gag! And i was confused that in such a short period , how or what made him deserving of it! Of course he was the messiah of hope etc, and i too had thought that he wud bring change to the world, and we still have time to see if that happens, so i didn’t know whether we had reason to cheer abt his prize! So I just tweeted abt it and let it go! Something fishy abt the whole thing isn’t it?

  34. 2009 October 10

so true…obama is sort of newcomer in politics…not even one year..and that too no extra ordinary achievments in his kitty…so for what the hell he got this award..

US is still struggling with recession…while rest of world is quite out of it ..or on a positive side…

  36. 2009 October 10

LOL for ‘ Obama’s Nobel is like awarding Lifetime achievement award to Ranbir Kapoor expecting him to perform well. ‘ I am using LOL word for the first time!

Obama’s main plus point is that he became President after Bush JR! After watching Bush, whoever became President of the US of A, would have won the Nobel Peace Prize.

They must have missed to notice the way he is aiding Pakistan to buy weapons…Maradhi Mannargal (Kings of forgetfulness!)

Yes, like so many comments here, Gandhi should have been born in the USA or England. Or at least in Norway!

Obama should have been considered for this prize after 2-3 years. Let us be broad minded…in this unhappy recession period, this might make the people of US happy!

  37. 2009 October 10

I searched for the closing date of nominations. It says,

Closing date for nominations of Nobel Peace prize: 1st Feb 2009

Obama sworn in as President on: 20th Jan 2009

So he was nominated for 10 days of his work? :|

    • 2009 October 10

And we whine about the Filmfare Awards and National Film Award being fixed. All you fixers, you were aiming too low! As you have mentioned, Solilo, being nominated for just 10 days of work is beyond ridiculous. They are diminishing the value of the Nobel by such antics.

    • 2009 October 10

I too noticed it and my son too told me about it. Even in America, people are not able to believe this news, it seems. Everyone is of the opinion that it is too early to judge him and select him for the Nobel peace prize. The reputation and dignity of the Peace Prize came down when they ignored Gandhiji first and now by giving it to Obama.

    • 2009 October 12

It was a shocker…so he was nominated based on his speeches and promises. not on the fulfillment of the promises..
like me, the committee too were mesmerised with his election speeches…

  38. 2009 October 10

I think obama is given nobel peace prize in anticipation that he will bring peace to afghanistan, will remove the world from rescission and will find out all the nuclear sites of iran and will plan a attack on iran in the lines of iraq.

  39. 2009 October 10

The answer is simple NO..I mean it’s too early !

  42. 2009 October 10

    Does he??

  43. 2009 October 10

I would quote what someone said on twitter “giving nobel peace prize to prez obama is like giving lifetime achievements award to ranbir Kapoor.. Shows promise, but already??”

  44. 2009 October 10

i was shocked. my respect for ‘the’ Nobel prize stands shattered

  45. 2009 October 10

(WordPress didn’t accept my comments last night, so here they are now, let’s see if it accepts it this time)

You know, this morning when I read this news, I also thought about the same thing, whether he really deserves the award. Sure, he is on a path to bring about a lot of changes, he has big plans, which most people believe he can make true, but as for actual tangible results as of now, I am not so sure.
Moreover, his nomination was decided when he was just 2 weeks in the office. I am not sure how did the Nobel prize committee make a decision on a person just being in office for 2 weeks. Will they give a scientist a Nobel prize just because he is working on some possibly really good research, AIDs cure (for e.g.). Just because the prospects looks good doesn’t make him a candidate for a prize!!
I would have wanted him actually bringing some results before he was given this award.
    Just a thought..

  46. 2009 October 10

I don’t think anyone can accomplish enough in 9 months to deserve a nobel peace prize. People spend lifetimes pursuing something and a nobel prize is like an apt acknowledgment of their effort in that field. And he got it in 9 months? What has obama done since he took over the oval office?

I think the last time he said or did anything that inspired hope was the ‘yes we can’ speech. Nothing since then.

He does not deserve the award. Period.

  47. 2009 October 11

i m otherwise a well-wisher and supporter of Obama… but this is one announcement that makes me wary :-|
i mean were they thinking in terms of his announcement to get the troops out of Iraq by 2010???
Or is it in the promise what is to come in general, thru his leadership?

    either ways… :-| i’m not too sure..

i read arm twisting by the powerfully influencial, a sweet dagger on the democrats, ..it smells very fishy.

And speaking about gandhi – no man can award gandhi for his “non violent movement” . it became a tool for many nelson mandela, martin luther king – The award for giving gandhi is yet not invented. it is like saying , if there was a god and has created the sun and the earth – the human beings are giving god a prize.

this comment will become too long if i keep writing.

  53. 2009 October 12

Nobel Peace Prize always reflected the political views of Western Countries and need not be considered as a World Prize.Only after the 2nd World war that they seem to realize that there are ppl in the 2nd and 3rd world too. This time everybody expected Hu Jia the prominent Chinese dissident will get the award. But finally the Prize committee was not brave enough to irritate China in these difficult economic times . By giving it to Obama without giving ihm anytime to do something of worth, they further devalued the Prize they are giving. Good that Gandhiji did not get it

  54. 2009 October 12

Even before announcing, it was predicted that the prize may be given in such a way that it helps with the future peace efforts. Probably Obama is the person who could do that to some extend. Or, Obama is one person many people are looking forward to.

I remember reading Obama’s message to the islamic community once, which sounded like from a genuine heart, and comforting.

I guess any organization or committee is skewed in some ways or the other. We all know the greatness of Gandhi. He doesn’t need a nobel prize to be recognized, after all. Or let us say, it will only degrade him :)

The question is not whether he deserves it… The question is if he deserves it now!!

  60. 2009 October 12

For one, I wanted to put up this post and I have done away with that plan.

Yeah I do not feel Obama deserved that award… probably too early for him. He has the right plans, he has been working on settling some disputed in the middle east, trying to move the army away from iraq and stuff… but still none of them had been put into real action yet.

No slowly gradually, the whole purpose and quality and standard of these awards are going for a toss purely because of some useless judges!

  61. 2009 October 12

Like many here, I too feel like he has not done anything significant yet to deserve this.

  62. 2009 October 12

I felt that he was given the prize very early..
they could have waited for sometime and look at how he works rather than by going his speeches…

  63. 2009 October 13

i like Obama, and respect him a lot too. but don’t find it justified!
    its premature….

but if this is the trend, then why not cash in on it!!!

i want a prize for being a good wife…based on my track record as girlfriend till date

sigh. Gandhiji is beyond any prize! the man is just something else.

my bday is on the day he died… :| :(

Very well articulated article Don err Peaceful Solilo..
People are saying now that it is just to enable that he will do something now…
its like I get hike(which I anyway dont get ) for the work I would do in future ….crap…

Thanks everyone for your comments. I couldn’t reply to many individually but I read all and finally some topic where we all concur with each other and entire world joins us too. :D

I agree with everyone who wrote that Gandhiji is above such rewards. That is why I think Nobel committee regretted and never gave him one later. It is a black mark on them forever.

Hey, there’s a trending topic on IndiVine called Barack Obama & The Nobel Peace Prize, you should add this post! :-)

  67. 2009 October 13

i was surprised when i heard of the award, but i am quite okay with the idea of Obama getting the award. He exudes a kind of hope that none other of his generation has been able to do..

Like I read somewhere on the Net, the Nobel was probably for simply ‘Not being Bush’! Whoa…been away from your blog for too long, soli. Missed a lot of your posts!!

Why did they give the Nobel peace prize to Obama,
While not giving it to the more deserved “Mahatma’,
    manipulating by playing out a neat little drama;
at least they should have given it posthumously to Vatsayana
for telling us to make love and not war through his sutra of kama.

    me: Ha..ha.. I concur with last 2 lines. :D

  71. 2009 October 13

Hmm…maybe the organizers thought they were giving the peas prize?

  72. 2009 October 15

I think the fact that his own staff thought it was akin to a April fool’s joke says it all. It is a Nobel SPEECH prize at best and reeks of pandering to a president very much in his infancy not to mention he was just a junior senator prior to that.

I’ve lost respect for the august body like millions the world over.

How about changing Noble Peaceability Prize? Huh! I have all the abilities to compete Mr. President :) but still lacks the power to impress Peace Institute – oh! I may need to get my AoKB degree (AoKB => Art of Kissing Butt)

It is very evident all the members of this Peace Institute are already have their PhD in AoKB.

How about we esablish an Audit Firm for conducting a secret audit to ensure the committee elects laureates appropriately every year? Nice idea – Hmmm! lots of money – who wants to partner with me? Guess What? We don’t need to release these audit reports to the public until 75 years – so that auditor can live and enjoy their fake non-sinful attitude through out their lives happily?

    Happily ever after…. :)
