Monsoon in Kerala – a nostalgia..
Every year we vacation in Kerala around this time. To enjoy the summers here we stayed back this year so now missing the monsoon in Kerala. Those who know me well would be surprised to read this because they are aware of my revulsion to rainy season. That’s because it pours here to perpetuity and creates a gloomy environment. Too much of anything is not good, not even rain.
Kerala monsoon arrives with great clamor. As a child, while vacationing in Kerala, I was petrified of lightening and thunder. Sky looked as if it gulped a thick black smoke. I am still not fine with the lightening and thunder part but okay with monsoon. Just having hot tea, some snacks and chatting with everyone….aaah! missing that.
There are two monsoon seasons in Kerala. The one I am talking about is Southwestern monsoon. Rains start at Edavam month (mid May – mid June- 1o th month) of Malayalam calendar. It is called Edavapathy. Monsoon is the ideal time for rejuvenation therapy. Many follow a special diet and go for ayurvedic massages and treatments around this time. I don’t follow any diet because I go on vacations to stuff myself but I do go for ayurvedic massages. It cleanses the skin and alleviates body ache.
Karkiddakam month (mid July- mid Aug- 12 th month) is when the rain is at its boisterous worst. Those who plan a trip to Kerala for any ayurvedic treatment should choose this time. Rain hinders long travel plans and ayurvedic therapy requires ample rest time. This is not the time for fun trip. Many people have a special diet called Karkidaka kanji in the morning during the entire month of Karkadakam. It is a gruel prepared out of nine pulses, fenugreek, Cow’s milk. These days you get to buy packets in the stores so people just buy that and add it to the hot milk. No one follows this diet in our immediate family but I have seen my distant relatives esp. older people enjoying this as breakfast.
This month is also known as Ramayana maasam ( month of Ramayan) in Kerala. During the entire month, the epic Ramayan is read in most temples and households. It is said that since this month was gloomy for everyone esp. the agriculturists because of the heavy rains, time was spent reading Ramayan and in spiritual healing. The reading of the Ramayan begins on the first day of the month and is completed by last day of the month. Ramayan is divided in various kandam (chapters) so the paarayanam (reading) is in the chronological order or one can choose just one chapter and read it the entire month.
Last year when I was in Kerala I wanted to start reading Ramayan too. We have never done it in our home. I have been to temples during the time and listened to the reading but never at home. So I got Adhyatma Ramayanam for myself. Since I am not fluent in the language, my Dad showed me a page and translated it for me to read it every day. I read that the whole month last year and plan to do the same this year too. This year Ramayana maasam begins on July 17 and ends on August 16.
I never knew I would miss Kerala monsoon so much and write about it. Nostalgia makes people do crazy stuff
. Listen to this music titled Varshaa : Rain melodies.
Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain.

The best part of kerala for me personally is when the trains cross the border from TN to Kerala….. the greenery hits you……….
especially when travelling from coimbatore to palakkad……..
me: Yes! I remember the train trips to Kerala during school vacations, we used to be so bored seeing red soil and dry area and suddenly the greenery, people working in the fields bring so much joy.
Also the ethakka-appam (Banana fritters) at Palakkad railway station. Yum…….yum..yum..*droool*
oily hot “ethakka-appams”………
wah wah….. OG is also drooling here

I am sure his son won and watching Ben 10, Little Krishna while Hitchy is sulking in the corner or stuffing himself with parathas.
Crafty must be in bed. She is a cutie pie.

enikkum naattilekku ponam…wwwaahhh!!! I miss Kerala too!
me: Oye! you just came back. It will be one year for me by August end
I remember this was the time we used to go on vacations to Kerala, when small. And I used to hate those outpours! But now,I’m literally craving for that atmosphere, the wet smell of the soil, the getting wet in the rains.
me: Back then we used to be back by June mid so never witnessed the Karkaddam rain but now after moving to US, I have.
Oh yes,I remember the saptahams that would be the norm in temples, even in Delhi, this season of the year. How we used to accompany my grandparents to listen to the exponents telling us stories from the Ramayanam & Mahabharatam. Those were the days indeed!
me: I started noticing all this after moving to US. I mean now on vacations.
oh i just saw kerala in monsoons and i must admit its divine
me: Oh yeah! Munnar.
me loves monsoon in general… every bit of it…love the rains the food, the green color, the reason to have hot tea and pakoras
and those massages i have got done once… i blogged abt it here
http://monikamanchanda.wordpress.com/2008/09/02/in-the-birth-suit/
me: Just read it. Ha..ha..ha..
My aunt got a shock when she heard the same and decided not to get one.
I am getting it done since I had Peanut. I have a terrible Backache since then (probably because of Epidural). I go for a 5 day rejuvenation treatment (3 right after I arrive in Kerala and 2 before leaving for US).
Kerala is such a nice place and I love it Solilo… it’s really beautiful.. but never visited on rainy season
me: After June, it is mostly rainy.
I always love rainy season..
its very cool and I can sleep some more time
Kerala is a wonderful place,i want to see the backwaters and lazy around
I love rains and miss eating hot pani puris while getting drenched in the rain
me: Aah! Saritha, just for you my fav. rain song in Bollywood.
Thanx solilo,beautiful song
Lovely song and i love to get drenched in rain like them, but it will be only me and my kinetic honda
i used to get drenched while coming back from office and used to tell my mom that i didnt get shelter or the shelters were full with people
me: Moms. They never let us drench.
I let Peanut in the rain here and in India too but in India her Achamma (My MIL) runs after her with an umbrella
Even i used to allow varunavi into the rain back home and pinky doesn’t know what is rain, here it rains only once in a year,if that rains at night, then there is no chance of her to see rains
Thats my favourite too !!!!
I love this song too!!
I too love this song!
I love this song
solilo.. booo hooo. after watching this video i am cursing myself.. it brings lotsa memories back to me..
i stayed in mumbai for around 8 years before marriage. More than 4 months of rains every year and we used to carry on with college, office etc thru the downpour.. surviving the famous 26 june of 06 and what not.. but never did i really go out solely for enjoying the rains.. which i love so much. the video is shot in the town side of mumbai, the marine drive, taxis, buses, roads of mumbai.. ah!! i am missing all that too..
me: I like Mumbai Monsoon too. I mean the walks and all but you know for those who have to go for work in the rain, now that’s tough. Vacations and rains…much better.
I guess if I had amit by my side then, it would have been different.. I want to show the beauty of monsoons n mumbai to him one day!!!
me: Do we get a video of rhimjhim gire saawan starring Tara and Amit
ha ha ha,,, we dont have anybody to shoot out video.. but before that… we are nowhere near rains
All those posts coming up from different corners of india/world about rains are making me all the more green with envy.. even the swimming pool water is hot and reaching there is like getting a sauna bath already
me: Awww…
a) I love RAIN – period! It just pep’s up my mood. Being a Piscean, am very emotional and sulk down without reasons at times, but if its raining at that time, I just love it…It just calms me down……
b) Your nostalgia story is nice to read and making me want to go to Kerala more. Somehow al the plans to Kerala has always failed and never managed to visit kerala until now. am bothering my hubby….I want to visit Kearalaaaa..aaa……
me: I have turned this into a Kerala tourism promotional post.
Never been to Kerala..
have heard a lot..
will surely plan some trip when we visit India next time..
though i am not a fan of rainy season.. but still love the evenings when it drizzles.. the cloud formations… the smell of the soil…. wow.. too good.
me: Oorja, I am not either but I guess the togetherness is what Monsoon brings. You know when it rains, everyone is mostly home. So hot chai, snacks and loads of tales.
Of course I am talking about rains and vacation. those who have to drench and work might curse it.
Of course smell of first rain. It rains often here but the smell we have on Indian soil, I never experienced here.
oye solilo, kya yaad dila diya aapne!!!!
here i am somewhere in a desert, where it rains once a year or so….
and this for someone who has spent 9 yrs in Indian monsoons!
boo. boo.
me: Aww….Masood. Sach mein missing Indian monsoon, bhuttas and other snacks.
what a lovely lovley post!!! solilo, i’ve been to kerala only for summers, during school vacation…so never really enjoyed the rains there.
me: Same here, Crafty. We always returned by mid-June.
but yeah, have been there for edavam, when i had a prolonged vacation till june in munnar, at mom’s place…
the fog settles in eve and if u step out, u can’t even see ur nose!!!
and at nite, we can see fireflies in the backyard!!!
it was me, my cousins and cheeru!!! SIGH!!
me: Awww…cutie Cheeru! you miss her na.
My paternal grandparents’ home was a bit similar. No fog and all but chill in the morning (I always woke up with a cold), fireflies at night. Bliss! Munnar…you lucky girl.
inspite of being a mallu, am not very familiar or close to my native, or the language….all i got as a kid was boring download of superstitions, ridiculous customs and the “give-n-take” intricacies of marraige. bleah!
me: Crafty, I grew up not knowing most of it. I mean we were not religious. No puja and all though we visited temples. I am learning all this now after coming to US and vacationing in Kerala.
After my great-grandmother, I am the first in the family to observe Ramayana Maasam.
We don’t need to know all this to be a Malayali. You are a beautiful, loving person and that is all that matters. You can enjoy Mumbai monsoon too. Have some garma-garam bhutta.
glad to have read up on all this!!!
i luv u!
uzhunnu vada!!!!!!!
yummmmmmmmmmm
i will pester mommy to make some now solilo! andblame it on u for reminding me of it!!
hee haw haw haw!!!!
me: *Solilo envious of Crafty. Solilo needs Mommy.
*
awww Solilo (((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))
Peanut ki mommy needs mommy ?
Will have to tell Peanut to give you a chocolate so you stop crying
bhagoooo!
me: Ha..ha..ha..
alleee solilo!!!!!
okay….i will think of u when i eat them…..and hope u get the taste!!!
*crafty ponders if she shud let solilo sit on her lap this time*
me: Adjust your kneecap.
Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain. I agree. I love rain and thunder and the green all around, love every bit of it, walking in the rain (I find excuses) and also driving in the rain. Missing it here…
I think Indian monsoons are better than ever Indian winters
me: Where are you? Misshh you.
My husband loves driving in the rain.
Yes, I am surprised that you love the monsoons..coz you are a total summers girl
me: I am, Abhi. I am. I am Summer, Beach person. As I mentioned I have started loving monsoons after my Kerala vacations from US. It is more relaxing, no tension and with parents.
As a child, while vacationing in Kerala, I was petrified of lightening and thunder. Sky looked as if it gulped a thick black smoke. LOL!!
what an imagination Solilo!
me: Ha…ha..ha..
I am still not fine with the lightening and thunder part but okay with monsoon. Just having hot tea, some snacks and chatting with everyone….aaah! missing that.

ah! now I get it
only rains without any lightening and thunder? and lots of pakodaas and chai?
*bliss!*
come to my home Solilo
Ma makes awesome pakodaas and I can make the chai
(which you have to drink without making a face
)
me: YAY for Auntie’s pakoraas but Abhi’s chai…hmmm…hmm… still thinking..may be I will skip chai. *bhagoooo*
Karkidaka kanji ?
arre wah!that sounds fabulous..and very wise…..some of the ancient traditions are there for a reason na?health benefits…
This month is also known as Ramayana maasam ( month of Ramayan) in Kerala. During the entire month, the epic Ramayan is read in most temples and households. It is said that since this month was gloomy for everyone esp. the agriculturists because of the heavy rains, time was spent reading Ramayan and in spiritual healing. oh man! the history student in me is fascinated! simply fascinated! I had NO clue about this
me: I was amazed too. I didn’t have a clue either. Not all our traditions are bad. Some have scientific reasons like this one. Since rain made people depressive because of less job and destruction of crop, meditation/energetic diet/therapy/spiritual healing etc. gave them the strength.
Solilo the audio version is beautiful!!!!
simply soothing!
*crossing fingers and hoping that all this raintalk means that the monsoons will be in Delhi soon*
me: Is the Sun that bad?
((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))
muah!
No sunshine for me (except in winters) gimme lots and lots of rain and freezing Winters
summers?
plss take them away
me: You like freezing Winters?! Noooooo.
LOL! yeah I dont like summers at ALL and I LOVE freezing winters

and you will skip my chai?
lemme see about the pakodaas then
me: I am siding with Auntie.
Aunty err… “di has spoken like a true Indian.. give me the rains and winters… take the sun away… !!!!! lol… our summers… are totally unwanted… lol…
hey pakoda’s !!! mein I m also a entry !! I eat most… and give you both 2 pieces each !!!!
I WANT TO GO TO KERELA…and during the monsoons now that you rave so much about it. Have always wanted to go there….plans never seem to materialize. I want to do all the works…the house boat, the massages, the food…ohhh the foood…..I know I’ll eat like a pig
.
me: Me too.
I love the sound of thunder just before rainfall and then the pitter patter of the raindrops…just like in the starting of the song…
me: Thunder not so much but love pitter-patter of drops.
What what have you been up to this summer so far?
me: School and Ballet just over. So other fun just started and also enjoying our lawn and Garden which we never could in Summer.
I hate monsoons…I’ve never experienced the ones in Kerala but have the ones in Chennai and Kolkata…All that slush etc. gets to me…
Anyway, one does get nostalgic when one is abroad even for things one curses back home…How has the summer been this far?
me: Nostalgia it is, Bones. But I have started liking it on my recent vacations.
Monsoons are welcome everywhere in India, by most. This year they are late and everyone is waiting for them desperately for the badly needed respite from the heat.
I have not been to Kerala during the monsoons but can imagine what it must be like, particularly in and near the majestic Nilgiris.
In the North, I think there is nothing that can quite beat the aroma that the dry earth releases when the rains come down. Then, of course are the chai and pakodas, and the great fun of getting wantonly wet in the rain…sadly, that fun is hardly enjoyed now.
me: We still do. It is fun and the aroma of dry earth…bliss!
The Ramayana reading month is something one did not know about at all. And what is is even more pleasantly surprising is that you had read it last year and plan to do it this year too.
me: I plan to do it every year. I really found it calming lighting a diya at dusk and reading shloks from Ramayanam.
All our seasons have been harmoniously built into some religious activity or the other. It is a pity that most of us city folk who live in India have already lost touch with our fun-loving and and sanskar building traditions.
Here in Delhi, I am desperately waiting too see those massive dark clouds rumbling and shedding their load. All that we are having these days is load shedding of the most unwelcome variety.
me: That’s tough.
I too have a wish to go to Kerala during vacation..but I guess tourism is difficult in rain. When is the best time to go if one doesnt want therapy and all?
me: Reema, avoid June-Aug then. Other months are fine. There might be occasional rains but you will be fine.
i havent seen Kerela monsoons – but I have seen Bombay monsoons – and loved them. I’m as nostalgic about the Bombay rains. Oh it came down in such torrents, for days and days. I was in college then and loved walking in the rain. Or just sitting by the lake and watching it rain.
There’s something so magical about it…..
and i go into a reverie……..
me: I have seen Mumbai monsoon too. Reminds me of Garma-garam Bhutta…:D
I loved this post Solilo. Oh! I am so missing the monsoons, in this dry desert. It is strange, how I have been thinking of reading the Geeta, and you bring up the Ramayan thing here. Long ago I posessed a copy of the Geeta, the ISCKON one, and it just did not manage to touch me.
me: GM, we have been to ISCKON couple of times but I absolutely hate it. I mean the environment, discourse..everything. I have no problem with their followers but I cannot relate to it at all.
I believe the place of worship should be calm and serene and personal. I dislike bhajans aired through mics or any kind of noise pollution from other religious places as well.
I need an authentic one, maybe even the huge ones they have in temples, in Sanskrit, with the translation and discussion in Hindi. Don’t even have an idea where I would find something like that. I think I will pick up copies of the Ramayan and Mahabharata for easy reading too, they are so wonderful to read through. Sudden need for some soul food, i think.
me: My Ramayanam is in Sanskrit but in Malayalam script. It is Adhyatma Ramayanam. It is in this picture. I don’t read it daily as I don’t get time but I will do so from July 17 to Aug 16. I find it really relaxing.
You should get one on your next visit to India or may be try at the place you are in.
I will try, I mainly want to get my hands on a good copy of the Gita. Thanks.
And I don’t like ISCKON either. It seems more like a money-making, duping organisation, definitely nothing spiritual about it.
me: Same thoughts about ISCKON, GM.
I am thinking of getting my paternal grandmother’s (daadi) Gita. It is with my aunt. That Gita is authentic and really old.
Hopefully, the rain God will smile at Delhi also soon.
me: Amen
Ah.. yes. Rains
Nostalgic memories…
During the hailstone showers in April, my mom used to help us catch the crystals and we used to eat them in the back yard
Keral is lovely during monsoons… we had been to Waynad on an office trip and had thoroughly enjoyed ourselves
me: Never been to Wayanad. I need to bribe Smitha now.
yet to visit Munnar or the other places there
Rains remind me of hot pakodas, filter coffee…
me: Yes! Pakoras, Samosa, Chai, Vada….okay anything
I am a foodie.
Sitting in front on the balcony door and watching the rains
Super lovely post Solilo!
Me too Sol! A complete foodie!!
All vacations are measure up on the basis of the food eaten!!!!!
Sols, No need to bribe me – come over the next time, I am there
Hopefully, I will be going to India during the monsoons too – so do come over to Wayanad – when you are there
Already dreaming about Wayanad.
me: If we are in Kerala around same time and our schedules match then we must meet.
Great! Keeping fingers crossed then
i like the rain.. but then i also like the sun!!! its winter that i hate..
me: Me too. I can’t stand Snow. Never liked it. I mean once a while in a place I visit is fine but don’t like living in a snowy place. I LOVE Sun..Summer..Beach. Rain is good for nostalgia.
im sure kerala is beautiful in the rains.. even with the thunder and all..
dint know about ramayana maas.. so thats new information for me.
News is that the rains this year are gonna be subdued.
The pre-monsoon was pretty good in Blore but now the rains have become highly irregular.
Oh! please rain some more. Little Johnny would like to play in the rain.
me:
Rain Rain come again,
Come again and again,
Little Shilpa is in pain ,
Rain Rain come again.
well I don’t know much of malayalam but I love this song (made my mallu friends do the translation for this
)
Ah! Some nostalgia this post has! You reminded me of monsoon in Orissa! The place used to wear some beauty those does. Greenery everywhere and freshness all around. Sigh! Mumbai rains is more of a pain.
me: Smita, I think rains are best enjoyed during vacations. Schools and work during rain is really tough.
smita .. if you want to enjoy rains sanjay gandhi national park in goregaon is a great place to be. or go to to IIT/NITIE campus in powai… It is is B-E-a–uTIFUL….
me: Isn’t Sanjay Gandhi NP in Borivali?
Is it???
Guess I need to pay visit to the place
Thanks!
Borivali and Goregaon are stations next to each other no ??
no hitchu…there’s malad and kandivili between them
Oh! I luv the rain.
Why didn’t u come to Kerala this year ? See, the monsoons are evading us. Had u come, may be, we would have got the rains in time.
me: It is already raining in Kerala. Monsoon arrived around 25th May I believe.
This year it was 1 week earlier.
Anyway, gud reading abt the massages and ayurvedic diets.

I havent read the post yet.. need to come back and read…. tiring day today….
btw this is my favourite season… !! just yesterday made yummy onion pakoda’s from homey’s blog and treated the entire family !! and felt real proud !!!!!!!!! !
me: Hmm…*Solilo thinking whether to believe Hitchy*
what thinking !!!!!! ?? kamal hai… what a reputation I have built…
I just experienced Keralas monsoon this weekend. Woooohooo ! A huge relief from the heat of Chennai. ( It rains in Chennai only when I am outside
)
me: Vimmu, move! let people of Chennai enjoy some good rain.
The ‘Varsha’ music is really very good. The sound is so soft that I feel this should be heard at night, without any lights. The flute is too good.
me: I know, Sandhya. Love instruments. I have a collection of such music.
Here, in Tamilnadu, Maargazhi (Dec.15th to Jan.15) month, is just for praying. Every temple will have some sort of special discourses on Krishna (Thiruppaavai, Thiruvembaavai songs’ singing and upanyaasaas). Adi maasam (July 15th to Aug. 15th), is for Devi poojas. Friday poojas are very important in these months. In maargazhi maasam, people draw huge kolams (rangolis) with colour powder in front of ourhouse and keep a pumpkin flower in a ball of cow dung. The colour – yellow flower on green ball – looks nice. I was following these rituals, till some years back. Now, the interest is gone because, competition for kolams is not there. We used to draw huge kolams and compete with each other!
me: Thanks for letting me know the customs there. We really have such a diverse culture.
After another 20 years also, you will remember these things, Solilo. But our children are missing these funs. My children were not involved in anything, maybe because they were boys. Everyday is a routine day for them.
me: Sandhya, my parents never forced us into anything though they told us whys and hows of certain things. I got interest in it later on…much later because it fascinated me. If they are interested they will learn else they won’t. I plan to follow the same approach for the kid too.
Sols, I have never experienced Kerala monsoons
It is only since the last 2 years that we started going to Kerala during the hols. Before that it was always Jamshedpur. And during school times, it was always during summer! It sounds magical the way you describe it!
me: Same here Smi. We vacationed in Kerala till mid June so experienced rain for brief period. Now the vacations are longer till almost August end so I am learning and seeing new things. Also it is more relaxing now.
My parents observe Ramayana maasam properly. I have never done it – though I used to love going to Saptahams.. I never got around to reading Ramayana every day though. I wish I had though.. but reading Malayalam was always a difficult thing for me
And all this talk of food – unzhunnu vada and pakodas are making my mouth water! I haven’t had idlis and dosas since ages! Please send some uzhunnu vada my way please!!!
me: One plate coming your way.
Why don’t you make Idlis and Dosas at home? Do you get it nearby? We have no such provision so I make it at home but not often.
Yes, next year onwards, we will have to vacation during July and August too – school hols time.
Thank you so much for the vadas
I make them – but for the last few times, the batter was getting spoilt – don’t ask me how – nobody I know has had this experience – instead of fermenting 0 it starts stinking
Luckily yesterday , I made some – and it is fine – touchwood! So hoping to have some dosas for dinner today
Forgot mention – next year onwards, once Poohi’s school starts – we will be going to India during the monsoons too! So hope to enjoy it properly then
I can’t even say – You remind me of monsoons in Delhi!
That will remind me of roads overflowing with sewer water!
me: overflowing with sewer water! Now that’s some nostalgia.
Very lucid. almost felt that i was sitting with you reading the ramayan. This post is highly enlightening.
Happy Monsoon..
me: Thank you, Mampi.
Your nostalgia helped us learn something about Kerala. I have never been to Kerala..but I have always heard how beautiful it is (My parents visited there once).
So next time I plan a trip there, I know whom to call.
me: Yes….yes..Dev.
return my call. it’s urgent.
nostalgic now about kanpur.
I visited Kerala when I was very young in june… but dont remember anything at all…
but monsoons are my favourite season.. In schools we would pray to have the rains just when our schools would get over and we would love driving our bicycles in the rain…
me: I grew up in Kanpur with not much rain and if it did then mostly schools closed. I remember vacations in Kerala and eventhough we returned by mid-June still hated thunder and lightening there. Now the vacations are longer and also I am seeing a new Kerala and I LOVE it.
also near our house there is one street which gets filled upto 3-4 feet with water… driving the cycle in that was most fun… we would test our strenght pedalling in the water… !!
when i was doing jobs in marketing making calls in the rain would be fun… eating bhajjiyas at stalls and sipping tea whilst we were drenched is completely an awesome feeling… !!!! I miss those days…
plus here in indore… you dont get bhajiya’s easily… !!
The hot rotli’s and karele ki sabzi… !! the bhutta’s !!!!!! Monsoon is an amazing season… our river Narmada would flood and we would walk on the golden bridge… to its centre.. I and hetal used to go there too … it would be lovely the river would crash onto the pillars… !!
me: Aaha! so the romance was near river Narmada
Batao..batao..all ears.
In bharuch we woudl always have atleast 2-3 days when it would rain like crazy and roads would get waterlogged and almost all work would stop… !!
its cloudy out here… hope it will rain well… !! I m also gonna go in august in bharuch and hope to have nice rainy days while i m home… !!
me: Hope you have rain and have fun this time too.
It took me about two days to scroll down your comment list so that I could comment.
And it took so long despite the fact that I did not read a single comment. And now I scrolled back to see the words “leave one” next to the word “comments”
me: Ha..ha..ha..
Every year as it rains i just stand and wonder how nice it would be to splash in it. Now I have to make do with watching Neha. Just so if she falls ill, I could take care of her. Can’t afford to fall ill when Neha is ill. But I used to love riding my scooter in the rain. What a feeling!
me: Eventhough I am not a big fan of rain, I love walking in one.
nice post…even I miss the rains soo much and it so happens that my latest post happens to be on the same theme too..
Wayanad is a beautiful place to be at this point of time.I suggest u shud make it ASAP.. U will never ever regret it in life. Its just 35 Kms from my coll(NITC) so kinda been visiting the place so very often..
me: I have just been to very few places in Kerala. Heard a lot about Wayanad. Hope to visit some day.
I never get bored though..and the quote was the nail on the coffin..
Am blogrolling ya..cheers..
Nikhil
me: Honored and welcome to this space, Nikhil.
Kerala is heaven during monsoon. Had been there few years back n I was literally dancing in the rain. Feels like bliss with that greenery all around and the pitter-patter rain drops. How sad the monsoons haven’t yet hit us this time around

We are still sweating it out in the Hyd heat
Lovely description Solilo. It was like a movie playing rt in front of my eyes
me: Thanks Swaram and once again welcome to WP family.
Such a lovely post – what nostalgia! Kerala is so beautiful and green in general so I can only imagine how it must be….looking forward to visiting again, soon…
Take care and thanks for your wishes.
Corinne
me: You recently visited Ashtamudi, rt?
Happy Holidays Solilo. I got a welcome back present waiting for you. Please visit my site for more details.
Will check when I reach home, Ash.
me: Almost over.
makes my resolve to visit kerala for a holiday real soon stronger.
me:
pliss to check ur email!
hugs!!!!
me: Checked and replied and your guess was right.
Beautiful! want to visit Kerala during the rains. Beautifully written too.”Sky looked as if it gulped a thick black smoke”…lovely
Ayurvedic massages…drool drool
me:
Ramayan maasam sounds so nice…cleansing and uplifting. How nice that you have taken it up. We do this during the saawan month…take different characters in Ramayan and discuss them.
me: I think Saawan is same as Karkadakam month. See how different and yet so similar our country is.
Have fun
me: Having it.
Just saw your ‘on break’ alert. Have a great time!
me: Almost over. Will be back home tomorrow morning.
Ohh, you have put me in a nostalgic mood again…this is the time,I go home too and the pull of hometown is getting tougher to resist. This time schools are closing a little later so we are going only in August, will have to wait till then to see ‘Gods own country’. And when it is raining it is so beautiful like a fresh paint just applied….ah…
me: So will you be there for Onam?
Very nice post. I thought parts of Kerala also get rains in the winter months.
Monsoons in Mumbai can be intense and last the whole of four months. Atleast on two occasions one canlook forward to a holiday on account of flooding and the trains coming to a grinding halt. A shrinking green belt means we are deprived of the soothing green carpet.
After the killer rain on 26th July 2005….people seem to have forgotten to enjoy rains. A heavy downpour and people are scared and we seem paranoid abt Mithi river.
This year rains have been playing truant and everybody is worried about the coming days.
me: I think monsoon is tough for people who need to go out to work or school every day. It is better enjoyed by those vacationing.
ur post made me wish I was in Kerala right now!
Have a fun trip
me: IM, I think it is raining everywhere in India now. Isn’t it?
Hey, so you mean you finished reading the Ramayan in Sanskrit?WOw, that must be really tough? By the way – why do you plan to do it again?I mean – just to blindly follow the custom or you liked reading it the 1st time?Just curious to know.:-)!
me: No, I didn’t. My Ramayanam is in Sanskrit but in Malayalam script which I am not very fluent in. So as mentioned in the post, my dad translated couple of sholka for me to read.
As for “blindly” followling anything. I don’t think I do. I follow something that interests me. I liked listening to Ramayan and now I am reading it.
By the way, I love the spell before the rain – like when it gets breezy/pleasant and a lill dark…awesome! I just wish it stays like that and doesn’t rain,
!
me: I feel the same most time.
Hey, there’s something for you on my blog!
me: D, will check it when I am back.
Kudos on finishing the Ramayana . You should do a post about it .
me: Kislay, naah I didn’t finish Ramayan but hope to some day. It is tough.
Solilo, what a lovely post… that has the coolness, and the whiff of the rain scented nattumpuram
At this very moment, it’s pouring outside. It’s the fag end of the “thiruvaathira njaatuvela”, when they say the rains are endless… “mazha thiri muriyaathe peyyum”
Finally, the monsoons seem to have arrived, for it has been raining for nearly two days now. It’s slightly cold too, at night! And I love it. Even though commuting is difficult, and the sarees get wet, below the knee, this has to be among my fav. seasons. Also for the fact that it is going to be Karkidakkam in a few days, the Ramayana month, also the “pannja maasa” lol..
I think though, that Karkidaka kanji is acquired taste, one that I have not been able to acquire.. lol!
So glad to be here, and putting this down
Have been waiting to, for such a long time
((hugs)) to you and to Peanut too
me: Ushus, Missed you so much. {{{{{Hugs}}}}}
You are enjoying all that. Aren’t you?
Solilo,

me: Noted.
Heyy what a truly beautiful picture you`ve painted! I must visit Kerala someday..My parents went on a vacation in 2006 to the backwaters and they were completely awestruck. Ever since, I have always wanted to visit the place. And now your post is all I needed!
:)
me: Me too. I have not seen many parts of Kerala.
I have always read about monsoons in kerala. Oops…have seen it on Tv too. But yes, as far as my human imagination can allow me to wander, I can experience a lot of greenery and water and Wow!!
I wish I could be in Kerala at this moment.
Amen.
me:
You’ve been blogrolled!!

Oye,Sols!tell me honestly…how many times did your mind wander away to get just one peek at whats happening in the blogosphere ??? bolo bolo tell tell!!!
Blogomania is incurable, just in case you didnt know
me: That’s why I wrote this, Deeps.
Will comment on your friendship one when I am back home.
Unfortunately my experience with Kerala was very bad. I was there on my honeymoon and after Munnar we reached Thekkady and my wife fell ill. She was in a hospital in Thekkady for the rest of the trip.
I might go back someday coz. we couldn’t go to the backwaters in Allepy!!!
me: Oh! that’s terrible.
Are you in India vacationing?
I was… not vacationing, actually for a wedding which was loads of fun but damn hectic. I’m back now!
Lovely writeup
Though rainy season is one season I dont feel nostalgic about :p
me:
I think for me it has to do with the time nicely spend with parents during vacations. Started enjoying rains too.
my best friend is a malayalee and for years, her mother has talked to taking me along with them to their month-long kerala journeys.. it never materialized, but i know how much i have missed, from her description of the cashew trees and backwaters and spicy chicken curry… and my uncle, who’s got a thing for kerala, insisted on taking cousin and aunt there in the monsoon, to show what real rain is. it was a disaster of sorts, but they immensely enjoy the whole episode in the hindsight..
me: Oh! I think if you are visiting then won’t recommend monsoon months. At least not when you are a first timer. It is good only if you are in Kerala for Ayurvedic treatment or if you LOVE rains
.
I simply love the rainy season and even too much of it does not bother me!
But I prefer rain and solitude for some strange reason!
me: Now solitude is something I have always loved.
I don’t like the other rainy season ‘Thulavarsham’ in Oct/Nov because… ahem, I don’t much care for the thunder and lightning. Me and my dog are not too fond of thunder and lightning. But let me hasten to add she is more scared than me!
I am heading to Kerala tomorrow for a 4 Day trip, going to attend a colleague’s wedding, we were looking forward to this as a vacation of sorts, and even have two Keralaites accompanying us, but this latest comment recommending that first timer may not like it is really scaring me
The areas I am visiting are Trissur and Kollam.
me: It is good time now in Kerala. The second monsoon is worse. Don’t worry! go have fun. Rain or shine..Kerala is always fine.
Now..now ..you made ME nostalgic.. I’ve loved the way the rains kissed the greeny fields..and yeah another popular tea in the villages were – hot black tea with roasted rice in it
they add sme flavor too which i dnt remember! but it sure was refreshing during the cold days
me: Hot tea and roasted rice? What’s that called?
