Steel Magnolias

2009 April 26

Dear Peanut,

You know that your mom is now an addicted blogger. You even give me suggestions on what to post next and that is more of your knock-knock jokes. You told me one day that you love your nickname Peanut so much that now you insist that I call you the same.

My blogging friends Monika, GM and IHM tagged me to write five best things about motherhood. To tell you the truth I don’t know where to begin. Everything in the last 5 years have changed; the whole life. It is going to be a tough job to pen down 5 years of my life. Each of those moments is best things about motherhood.

Can I reveal a secret? You taught me how to be a better daughter. Shh…..don’t tell your grandma. She still thinks that her daughter is the most sensitive and caring daughter in the world. I am most certain that if there ever is a competition between your grandma’s daughter and mine then you are winning hands down.

And if there is a competition between whose daughter is a bigger drama queen then you are reaching there. One of the first few words you spoke was Shakur. Yes! You knew even then that your mom swore by Shahrukh Khan. Everyone teased me and asked if it was the effect of watching all those Shahrukh movies while carrying you. I used to dance to ‘Chaand ne Kuch kahaa….’  and you giggled. Is it any wonder that your grandma calls both of us biggest nautankis

Every weekend when you go out for biking with your Dad, without fail you bring me a bunch of wild Daisies. At a shop you select a Blue piggy bank because it is my favorite color which I had probably mentioned it just once. How do you notice such little details and remember it when you forget to drink your milk and finish those vegetables?

The other day I was checking something on youtube and you ran to me and asked if I can put ‘Enthu paranjaalum nee entetalle vave’ song. Why? Because you remember your grandma singing it to you. When I put the song, you told me that you miss them and immediately wanted to meet your grandparents. Both of us cuggled and watched the song and called up grandma and made her sing the song. You even remember the song I used to sing to you as a baby. Hush little baby and Unni vavavo. Now you insist that I replace baby with big kid in Hush little. :)

You have noted down your grandparents, Mamu’s, Dadda’s and my birthdays in your little book and make hand made cards for all of us. Just recently you insisted that Dadda cut a cake and we decorate the room with balloons. Your Dadda very proudly cut the Pink cake you selected for him. Pink Cake! :D

The compassion you have at the tender age of 5 is something I have never seen. That day when I was enjoying my spicy Egg roast with occasional sounds of iss-iss, you ran to get me water. The tears which filled my eyes then were not because of the spice.

Oh yeah! Another thing. Between Aishwarya Rai, Angelina Jolie and your mom; you think your mom is the prettiest, tallest and most gorgeous. Sigh! Only if your dad could think like you. Well! We anyways outnumber him in the house so our team wins.

You love to flip through old albums and love seeing your baby pictures then come up with questions like how you crawled, how you giggled, how you ate your food. Mamma is attaching a picture of you at 4 months when your grand parents and we took you to your first tiny train ride at Royal Gorge and you kept your eyes closed the entire ride because you hated sun falling on your eyes.

peanut1

These days I try to be a lot like grandma. Don’t I? I want you to grow up strong, independent and an achiever. Parents’ love is selfless and yet without your knowledge you repay us through all these gestures. You repay us every moment through your caring nature, love and your smile. These are the memories for us to cherish when you grow up and start a new life.

Never forget to be empathetic and considerate to others just like you are now. It takes you a long way and makes you a better human. And always raise voice against injustice and inequality.

Remember that we will be always there for you when you need us. We will be there to share your happiness and sorrows. The thought that you have turned into a fine adult is going to make your Dad and me happy and assure us that some decisions we took in our life were worth it.

If someone asks me what is the best thing about motherhood I can just sum it all and say,

The best thing is having you in my life.  I am never really alone because you are always in my thoughts. The moment you were born, your Ma was born too.

With lots of love and ummas,

Your Ma

Lovely Solilo…..esp the “I am never really alone because you are always in my thoughts. The moment you were born, your Ma was born too.

In our household cuggle is kuddle[koo]….the kids never hrd the pronounciation anywhere, read it in a book & decided it pronounced like tht. So its always “Lets kuddle mama”;-D

me: When she was small, Peanut couldn’t pronounce ‘Cuddle’ and she ould say ‘Cuggle’. Somehow I never corrected her because cuggle sounded just so cute and it is Cuddle + hug. :)

    Dear Peanut,
You know your mom is a great mum, but after reading this letter I am reminded once againof what a lovely human she is.

I always noticed she was strong and honest, fair and frank, but reading this letter to you, kind of reminds once again of how she is also teaching you the values that will make you grow up into, not just a better person but also a happier person:)

Stories of baby hood with albums as picture-books are the warmest stories ever.
You look so adorable in those sunglasses :)
Your pink cake for your dad is stuff that mommy-blogs are made up of!!
Do you know there is another family, far away in India, where we call some members nautanki and for reasons quite similar to your family ;)
And it’s so true, so true that we mothers are re-born when you babies are born, the whole perspective of our lives changes, you babies.. oops kids, have the power to make moms stronger, better people :)
Your moms letter to you is something I mean to read to my daughter too, I know she will be able to relate to it :)

    hugs,
    IHM

me: IHM, Thank you for such lovely words.

{{{Hugs}}} to the nautankis living there.

  8. 2009 April 26

aww man, that was such a sweet post..
dadda got a pink cake coz his daughter picked it?wow… thats like too cute (reminds me of the time my kid cousin wanteed a light green cake.. he brought the house down till everyone agreed he was going to get a green froggy cake for his buddy… it wasnt very appitising to look at, i assure u..)

me: She wanted her Dad to cut a cake so she picked a Pink cake with Purple flowers on it.

its amazing how much we learn from our own mothers.. and how much of what we learn we try to impart to our kids… i think momz must be the biggest influence in our lives…

peanut with the shades looks too cute… tell her i said that!(hugs to peanut n peanuts mumma!)

    me: Sure :)

  9. 2009 April 26

awwwwww……such an adorable kid Peanut is :)

ur one lucky mother and Peanut is one lucky kid to have such an adorable mum :)

hugs and kisses to Peanut and the Mum :D

    me: Aww…..thank you.

  10. 2009 April 26

Acchoda, sundarikutty!!Peanut is a darling! She looks adorable in the snap.Give her lots of hugs and ummas.
Now you’ve got me all choked up,Sols.Have to tell you, though, both of us seem to be really getting better by the day in making the other misty-eyed:D!!
    Its so touching a post.

me: We make perfect mothers for a Karan Johar film. Don’t we? Ha….ha…

The loving gestures from our children may seem small but they mean the world to us,alle??She touched a chord in my heart somewhere when I read she ran up to get you water while you were having the egg roast.

me: Yes and I appreciate it a lot when Peanut does that. For me every small gesture a child does matters because I believe as a parent and adult we do things out of love and duty but as small children their love is so pure. For me it is above the parental love of mine.

‘The best thing is having you in my life. ‘…you said it all in that one line,Solilo:)
Hugs to you from an equally doting mother:)

    me: Hugs back Deeps.

    That was too good. sweet…

and “unnivava” seems to be the song that most Keralite mothers have sung to their kids.. I did.. nd thanks for reminding me…

me: That movie had so much impact on me seeing a young girl going to her grandparents and not revealing the truth about her parents death. I just know couple of lines and I used to repeat that but she still remembers it. Her favorite is still her grandma’s song :)

reading your’s, Smitha’s and IHM’s posts, rekindled much memories of motherhood….

nd yes.. we all are our mother’s daughters….

  17. 2009 April 27

Pink cake for her Dadda ….nice, indeed.

She looks beautiful in the photo, typical babylook. Everything is new to them, but to grasp it and enjoy, she must have taken another 2 months more, am I right?

These lines are the best, solilo:

The best thing is having you in my life. I am never really alone because you are always in my thoughts. The moment you were born, your Ma was born too.

me: Ha..ha…ha.. that reminded me of something my Dad told me. He had a Subhash Bose and Lata Mangeshkar in his class. No! their parents’ last name was something else.

The love i feel is deep and real,
As if it had been so,
For us to have each other,

me: What happened, Vichu? Why so sad? I read on your blog too that you were feeling low.

Unni means baby in Malayalam. That song is a lullaby from a Malayalam movie.

(((((hugs))))for a lil darling from Abhi maasi

Solilo….tell her I do think of her as Peanut…. for, that brings to my mind the picture of a little imp :)

me: I told her just now. She is confused how come we haven’t met this maasi if she lives in India. :D

Tell her also that her mom is one of the most honest human beings I have come across …

tell my darlin Peanut that in this pic of hers I am trying to find traces of a dear friend :) to see if my friend also looked like this when she was 4 months old….

    me: Yes. She did. :)
Did she look like this?… Peanut’s mamma?:)
Tell her also that I am trying to guess if Peanut looks more like her dadda or her mamma…:D

me: Peanut looks more like Dadda but it keeps changing.

Peanut..How did your mamma know that Steel magnolia’s is a fav of your maasi’s too? :)

Your dad dotes over you, doesnt he lil princess? :) A pink cake :) that reminds your maasi of her own dad:)

I love your other name but I love this name more…Peanut…coz that brings to my mind the pic of a little girl who is forever talking, climbing trees, scraping her knees, tears forming in those big eyes, lips quivering, trying not to cry……
intelligent like her mamma and dadda :)

You remember your mamma’s fav colour, and bring her flowers always …you know Shakur is a word that will please mamma’ heart immensely :D you are a smart cookie arent you Peanut? :D

me: What do you expect from a kid who was fed mushy movies as a child instead of Baby Einstein videos

(((hugs)))coz you are a darling…and coz your mamma and dadda are blessed to have you and so are you to have them…

Be Strong, be independent… fiercely so, be your own person, stand up always for what you belive in…and I know you will always belive in the right things because I know your mother :) be soft, be hard, be your own knight in shining armour instead of waiting for one.. and still keep dreaming dreams of romantic fluff and all that stuff(sorry Peanut’s mamma …Abhi Maasi’s leo heart cannot live without the romance) :D

me: Peanut’s Capri Mamma is a romantic too.

God bless you and yours Peanut…
Your mom has written that the day you were born, she was born too…..I am reminded of something that I felt when I grew up and realised in college about my mom Peanut…

”When I stopped seeing my mother with the eyes of a child, I saw the woman who helped me give birth to myself.”

    me: Aww…beautiful.
And I know… just know…that when you read these words of your mother among the many others she has shared…you will know just what I mean…:)

PS:-Did mamma cordinate all the colours? :D of the goggles and the dress? :D
    figures!:D

me: Ha….ha….ha…Mamma has impeccable fashion sense *Solilo’s self praising ends*

arrrrr! You guys are mean, evil people. x-)

I loved Indyeah’s comment. It was sooo sweet and sentimental. (if that’s the right word to use.) It made me feel like a child again. o:-)

Solilo and Indeah, you are made for each other – example for true friendship. God bless you both.

  49. 2009 April 29

Ok, i am super late…. sorry for that. Solilo, write out this entire thing in your own hand, save it in an envelope and gift it to the Peanut on her 18th birthday. This is just beautiful. loved it. And yes the Peanut at 4 months, A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E.

me: I already have a Baby shower baby book for her 13th and entire pregnancy journal for her marriage. How much more emotional blackmail can I do? Ha..ha..ha..

These silly letters are for moi to enjoy later and laugh.

    • 2009 April 30

That is such a wonderful thing. I am sure she would love them, when you give them to her. The pregnancy journal is a really cool idea woman! Peanut is lucky to have such a thoughtful and loving mom!

  50. 2009 April 29

Awww!!!! Such a sweet post :-)

And she is a sweetheart :-)

Am glad she will fall in love to with this letter :0)

me: I don’t know if I will actually give this letter to her. These are some of the things for me to read and reminisce her childhood when she is away :)

  51. 2009 April 30

You got me all nostalgic again…beautifully said, straight from the heart…no wonder it touched hearts. If only we could cling on to our kids. I used to hear daughters are like grapewines, they grow so fast..so true. Beautiful Post , Bless Peanuts, and Bless you too….I have done a post on my Daughter , My teacher……Now I should do one on my daughter, my friend…will do.

Checking your blog after a long time. But of all your posted blog, I like this one and rate it the best. More and more I read about peanut, it gives me sense of calmness. If possible, print this letter on a fine decorated letter and give her one day when she is going to need it the most i.e. when she is off to college.

me: V, hope now you are fine. Talked to G for 2 hrs and we still have tons of topics left

Aww…these things are for us to reminisce. I am not for emotional blackmailing. :D I believe that children well brought-up with right values always turn out good.
